Big 5 Sporting Events in August from @thePunditsSA
The Big 5 Sporting Events coming this August
Highlights according to our pal Ryan Wallace from The Pundits
Traditionally, August is a busy month for sport and this year is no different.
Rugby, Cricket, Golf, Formula One, Cycling and Football, the list of matches, races and meets in the 8th month can go on and on. I only have time to tell you about my top 5 events for the month, so here goes.
- 8 August 2013: US PGA Championship
I could pretend to know anything about Golf, but I really don’t. The internet told me is that this tournament takes place from 8 to 11 August at the Oak Hill Country Club and that is as much as I know.
Stick with me, this gets better. I Promise.
- 17 August: Barclays Premier League
The Barclays Premier League is widely regarded as the most-watched soap-opera in the world. Big stars, money, scandal and Luis Suarez – the Premier League has it all. No Sir Alex “FA” Ferguson brings an air of uncertainty to this season and I for one can’t wait for it to kick off.
Notable games in August:
26 August: Man United vs Chelsea
- 17 August: Rugby Championship
South Africans will be glued to their couches on the 17th as it also sees the start of this year’s Rugby Championship. South Africa, Argentina, Australia and the Sheep-Shaggers will battle it out to become the champions of Southern Hemisphere Rugby.
South Africa will play Argentina on matchday 1, kickoff at 17:00 (FNB Stadium)
- 26 August: US Open Tennis
From the grass of Wimbledon onto the hardcourts of America. The US Open should be very interesting this year as Andy Murray (Current Holder) just came off a Wimbledon win and should be high on confidence. Can the likes of Djokovic, Nadal or Federer knock him off his perch?
My prediction: at the end of the tour Murray will go back to being Scottish in the eyes of Britain.
- 30 August: UEFA Super Cup
This will be the 38th edition of the UEFA Super Cup, a one-match cup that sees the reigning champions of the UEFA Champions League take on the winners of the Europa League, the two main European club competitions. FC Bayern Munich vs Chelsea FC – Pep Guardiola vs The Special One.
This is Chelsea’s 2nd Super Cup in as many years so they will definitely want to win it this time around. With both clubs under a new manager and plenty of history between those managers, the result could really go either way.
Those are my sporting highlights for August, there are plenty more so grab some beer, get some biltong and support your favourite teams and players.
